FIMBank supports national battery campaign
24.08.2009
As part of its CSR programme for 2009, FIMBank plc is sponsoring and supporting the Battery Buster Campaign, a national initiative which aims to raise awareness about the negative impact batteries can have on our environment if disposed of incorrectly. The campaign is being managed by WasteServ Malta Ltd.
After targeting schools earlier this year, an effort which resulted in students collecting no less than 5.2 tonnes (5,200 kgs) of spent batteries, the Battery Buster Campaign has now been extended to reach the general public. Battery Buster Bins have been placed in more than 45 supermarkets, shopping complexes and other centrally-located commercial establishments in various locations in Malta and Gozo.
Consumers are being encouraged to dispose of their used batteries in an environmentally sustainable manner, while at the same time participating in a competition with attractive prizes to be won. A minimum of five used batteries must be sealed in a paper or plastic bag together with a label bearing the relevant contact details and deposited in a Battery Buster Bin found in any of the participating outlets. The more bags one deposits, the greater the chance of winning one of the prizes, which include a TFT 32 inch Flat Screen TV, a Digital MiniDV Camcorder and a WebSurfer Netbook.
Outlets which have kindly agreed to install Battery Buster Bins on their premises to date include Agenda Bookshops, Arkadia Foodstores (Gozo and Portomaso), Chain Supermarket, Carters Supermarket, GS Superstore, JB Stores, Peacocks, Pedigree Toyshops, Piazza Italia, Scan Computers, Scotts Supermarkets, Shoppers Discount Supermarket, Shopwise Discount Store, Smart Supermarket, things*, The Duke and Tigrija Palazz.
Commenting on the campaign, FIMBank plc President Margrith Lütschg-Emmenegger stated that the enthusiasm generated during the schools campaign was a source of encouragement for the Bank in its bid to support an environmental initiative which would be of benefit to Malta and the Maltese. Ms Lütschg-Emmenegger stated that FIMBank sees its role in this initiative "as part of our Social Responsibility as a company aiming to provide a better environment for the Maltese community".
Further details about the Battery Buster Campaign, as well as downloadable labels to be affixed to the exterior of the bags, can be found on the official website www.batterina.net.
