History, Government and Investing in Malta

Once home to ancient civilisations, Malta's location at the heart of the Mediterranean is the key to its rich history. At the crossroads of maritime routes, during 7,000 years the Islands have been a home, stronghold, trading post and refuge.  From temple builders, seafaring Phoenicians and the traveller Apostle Paul, to the Knights of St John, Napoleon and British royalty - all have set foot here leaving their imprint for you to discover. The Islands have several World Heritage Sites: the enigmatic, prehistoric temples; Malta's baroque capital Valletta, founded by the Knights; and the walled, medieval capital, Mdina, where descendants of Norman families still live today.  The palaces and cathedrals of Valletta and Mdina house some of Europe's finest treasures.

Government

Malta is a Republic with a democratic system of Government. The titular head of state is the President who is appointed by the House of Representatives. Legislative power lies in the hands of the House of Representatives which currently has sixty five members drawn from the two major political parties. Elections are held every five years. Executive power is exercised by the Prime Minister and the Cabinet. The Prime Minister is usually the party leader commanding the greater support in the House.

Investing in Malta

The Maltese economy is a very open one and one where foreign direct investment in many of its sectors will remain crucial. The over riding attitude to inward investment is therefore one which seeks to encourage and assist. This applies equally to Government, its agencies, the financial institutions, as well as professional support and prospective local partners. There are many good reasons to consider investment in Malta. These include its location in the centre of the Mediterranean, its excellent communication structure, its educated and skilled English-speaking labour force, a stable political situation, a strong industrial relations record and a great climate. Malta is still a reasonably priced location where the cost of living is relatively low by European standards as are labour costs. Malta's business laws and practices are very standard and the work and business ethic is high. A strong extensive international tax treaty network is in place which can provide competitive tax advantages.
